Although the USA Patriot Act has passed Congress and been signed into law by President Bush, Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances (PRCB) continues to fight for Americans freedoms as guaranteed by the Constitution. We will take on any issue that similarly infringes on constitutionally guaranteed civil liberties, including an issue of grave importance today – unwarranted federal government spying on Americans.
But first, PRCB is proud of the advances we made over the past year with regard to the final Patriot Act. When Patriot Act reauthorization was initially considered in 2005, President Bush was urging the Congress to make all of the temporary Patriot Act powers permanent and, indeed, to expand the act’s powers without any recognition of many Americans’ serious reservations about secret searches of their homes and their possessions at the hands of federal agents.
We not only informed appropriate members of Congress about those reservations, but we also helped shape the public debate surrounding issues involving Americans’ civil liberties and constitutional freedoms. The public dialogue that was established on these vital issues did not end with the reauthorization of the Patriot Act.
