CONSERVATIVES URGE PRESIDENT BUSH TO RECONSIDER
UNQUALIFIED ENDORSEMENT OF PATRIOT ACT

New Organization, Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances, Launched To Defeat Unchecked Powers of Patriot Act

What: A national network of organizations from across the political spectrum will hold a press conference on March 22 to launch a new organization, Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances. Its mission is to educate policymakers and the public about provisions of the Patriot Act that are out-of-line with the Constitution and violate Americans’ Fourth Amendment freedoms, including the right to privacy.

Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances will seek congressional review of the most intrusive, unchecked provisions of the Patriot Act. Some of these provisions will expire at the end of 2005, but many do not. Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances will also call on President Bush to reconsider his unqualified endorsement of the Patriot Act.

Who:

Bob Barr – Former Congressman and Chair, Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances
Grover Norquist –
President, Americans for Tax ReformChairman, American Conservative Union
Laura Murphy –
Director of the Washington Legislative Office, ACLU
Paul Weyrich –
Chairman and CEO, Free Congress Foundation
John Snyder –
Public Affairs Director, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
Michael Ostrolenk –
Michael D. Ostrolenk, Director of Government Affairs, Association of American Physicians and Surgeons

When: 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2005

Where: Phoenix Park Hotel, Georgean Room, 520 North Capitol Street, N.W., Washington, DC

Why: On February 14, 2005, President Bush asked Congress to make all of the temporary Patriot Act powers permanent, including a few extraordinary provisions. One allows federal agents to secretly search people’s homes and businesses and seize their personal property without notice. Another allows agents to collect personal data, such as medical documents and records of firearm purchases, without evidence linking them to a crime.

Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Americans’ fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment and ensuring that all provisions of the Patriot Act are in-line with the Constitution.
